Tatung Prototype The Nicest VOIP Phone I've Seen Yet [VoIP]
The difference between what I would like to look at and what I would like to use makes for a a gap wider than the Grand Canyon, in this case. One button, no tactile feedback and no screen make this VOIP phone prototype little more than an electronic lollipop. But my desire to lick one increases with every glance. [e-Nova via Yanko and BBG]
VoIP calls on Aircell?s Gogo? Big deal, seriously.
So you?ve found a way to make VoIP calls on American Airlines flights with Gogo by using some Flash-based service? Good for you, really, but anyone saying that they?ve hacked the system needs to reassess the meaning of the term. Stumbling upon an app that works is not hacking anything. It?s called being lucky. I honestly didn?t care enough to try out all the possible VoIP apps that are out there because I didn?t feel the urgency to chat with anyone. Nor did I want to bother other passengers.

Aircell vs. VoIP
Last week American Airlines launched their Aircell wireless Internet access on a limited number of flights. It didn't take long before a few folks tried to make voice and video calls (in violation of Aircell's terms-of-service according to their PR folks), and it didn't take long before someone figured a way around their voice/video blocking efforts. It's amazing how many times this battle gets fought. Service providers must know by now that people will find a way around their efforts to blo
Report: Cable Telephony Subscriber Growth Remains Robust
Cable telephony subscriber growth continues to be strong, with almost 8 million new subscribers added around the world over the past 12 months, reports In-Stat. Growth in North America has been particularly strong, as cable operators near the end of their transition to VoIP-enabled network architectures, the high-tech market research firm says. Recent research by In-Stat found the following: Worldwide cable telephony service revenues are on track to reach $12.6 billion in 2008, up from $10.7
DECT Solutions; Cheap to Build, Expensive to Buy
Chalk this up to another jaw dropping moment for Smith. In a newly minted blog post by iLocus on DECT Vs. WiFi (which is a great read), there is interesting nugget of information: A DECT phone is cheaper to build than a WiFi phone. (more?)
AirCell: Shut the VoIP Up
Our post on putting American Airline?s Gogo Wi-Fi connection (powered by AirCell?s inflight wi-fi technology) to the test has caused for quite a bit of chatter in the blogosphere. Most of the post focused on our experience in the ?Cloud? and watching videos on Hulu.com and chatting over instant messaging services. However, the VoIP call [...]
Blocking VoIP or Blocking Conversation?
There have been a flurry of blog posts in the last few about Andy Abramson's recent success in using Phweet's Flash VoIP approach to conduct a call over Aircell WiFi to a friend on an airborne plane. There's a bit of indignation from some fronts (how dare they block my phone call) to questions of manners (do we want the cell phone bad manners syndrome to extend into the airplane) to some rather stupid explanations from Aircell and the airlines. If you really want to understand how this traffic
VoIP on Mobile: The Singularity is Here
Business Week summarizes a variety of mobile VoIP services that allow you to make phone calls from your cellphone over Wi-Fi networks. VoIP calling is already raising a ruckus in telecommunications, putting pressure on the price of land-line calling and luring subscribers toward upstarts like Vonage and Comcast away from incumbents such as AT&T, and Verizon. Now, the technology threatens to erode sales for mobile-phone service providers too. These apps are popular amongst people who u
Issues don?t go away when Congress goes home?
?is something a certain site editor said to me as I complained about lack of substantiative things to write about. This complaining also took place during a break in one of my classes on property. Today we?re talking about the right to exclude someone from using your property, which in some cases is absolute, and some cases not (I guess I should remember this for the exam). Anyway, one of the cases that we?re looking at today is Loretto v. Teleprompter Manhattan CATV Corp (458 U.S. 419). It h
Tatung VOIP Phone
We appreciate the looks of this prototype VOIP phone that has won the 2008 IF, Red Dot, and IDEA awards. The Tatung has Bluetooth, wireless connectivity and a touchpad for ease of operation. The Internet phone has a customized casing and a nostalgic, nonworking antenna. Other than that, the phone would be great for Skyping when it seems you could use the simplicity. Let?s hope that Nova Design?s award winner becomes reality soon. Tags: bluetooth (T), nova design (T), skype (T), tatung v
How about a Blu-ray/VHS Combi?
A Blu-ray disc recorder and a VHS video tape machine may seem unlikely bedfellows, but that hasn't stopped Panasonic from wrapping them up together in the same box for the DMR-BR630V. The 630V can write at six times speed, has digital and analog tuners, new second-gen MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 encoder chips as well as all the standard HDMI and analog connections and Panasonic's Viera link for device interconnectivity. It also records to DVD. And there's even a 320GB hard drive inside, capable of rec
VOIP with Style
The award winning Tatung VOIP, is one classy phone with aims to making internet phones user friendly, writes Yanko Design. By Nova Design, it?s currently on exhibition but hopefully it will go into mass production.

Internet Provides New Opportunities For Political Dirty Tricks
Internet Provides New Opportunities For Political Dirty Tricks by Terrence O'Brien, posted Aug 27th 2008 at 1:01PM Dirty tricks used to mislead voters and keep them away from the polls, but new Web-centric attempts to disenfranchise voters are stoking fears amongst voters and activists. In the past, political trickery has relied on phone calls, fliers, and direct mailing, which are much easier to track and prosecute than the new wave of political scare tactics. Traditional calls, like the pus
IEEE standardizes fast Wi-Fi roaming
IEEE standardizes fast Wi-Fi roaming Posted by LiNTEK (Who am I?) Aug 27 The Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) has completed the 802.11r standard better known as ?Fast Basic Service Set Transition?. The 802.11r is a standard that lets Wi-Fi devices roam quickly between wireless access points (WAP) and  improves the performance of VoIP on enterprise LANs. Traditional 802.11 devices take around 100ms to roam from one access point to another. The latency time t
Cisco buys Exchange-a-like vendor PostPath
Updated with more commentary 4.16pm UTC. Hello, Techmeme. Suddenly, things are getting interesting again in the Exchange-alternatives market. The quintessential growth-by-acquisition specialist, Cisco (CSCO), has just announced that it's acquiring PostPath. Once again, Cisco makes a sound investment in an email technology vendor. Just like it did with IronPort. Great choice. These are the clever guys who reverse-engineered the Exchange client protocol, MAPI/RPC, and the related on-the-wire d
Squawk Box August 27, Mobile Roundup
We had plenty to talk about today including: The iPhone 3G is close to outnumbering first gen iPhones by selling 6 million units since launch a scant two months ago.  It took the 1st generation iPhone over a year to sell six million. Meanwhile, Android phones are still on the drawing boards as sketches of the T-Mobile G1 leak out. It?s one hot looking phone, but will they have the application infrastructure to compete with Apple? And  SmartPhone and PocketPC magazine has announced that their w
